We caught up with Sally Mitchell from the Fall Equinox Retreat in the San Francisco Bay Area to get the low-down on retreats and combining yoga with hiking, trail running, outdoor fitness, hot springs and wine!
Where are you and what does your venue offer?
I’m located in Northern California in the San Francisco Bay Area. I organize retreats at different locations around Northern California, in particularly Sonoma and Napa Counties. The venues I choose offer various combinations of yoga, hiking, trail running, outdoor fitness, hot springs, wine and more.
How did it begin?
I’m a yoga teacher, massage therapist, Reiki practitioner, and natural ChiRunning and ChiWalking instructor, which reduces impact and prevents injuries. My intention is to share my knowledge and experience of the practices and therapies that have helped me to heal my body and find more balance in my life. I also love spending time in nature and tasting local wines, so I decided to blend all these practices and activities and take people on a journey of exploration and transformation during a weekend retreat.
What do your guests/customers like best about your venue?
They love the variety of activities and practices offered. They also love that the retreats are always held in beautiful locations and we usually have the whole retreat center to ourselves. They love that each retreat has a theme, which helps provide some deeper purpose, inspiration and fun.
Why should people choose you?
You will experience and learn something new. You will get afternoons free to explore, relax or get a massage. We offer early bird discounts and partners/friends discounts, and our retreats are generally very good value for money, compared to others.
What is unique about your venue?
Our upcoming retreat in September 2014 is at a retreat center that has 6 mineral-rich and healing hot springs and pool. The theme is the beginning of the Fall season and Life in Balance since the Equinox is all about balance.
What is the best event you’ve had at your venue?
Our last retreat was one of the best so far, with the theme “Summer Solstice”. We did an evening drum circle around a fire pit to signify and honor the sun on the longest day of the year. We did sun salutations to begin the summer solstice day. Guests dressed in sun-themed clothes and accessories. A few people were total beginners to yoga, and by the end of the weekend felt incredible gratitude and shifts, which was so rewarding.
What are the best things to do in your area/neighbourhood?
Hiking, Cycling, Wine Tasting, Hot Springs, visiting San Francisco
Things you are looking forward to? Any crazy dream plans coming up?
We are looking forward to our Fall Equinox Retreat, coming up in September 2014, to celebrate the beginning of the Fall season! We love Fall and we’re excited to celebrate this season amongst the beautiful Fall colors in nature. The theme is Life in Balance since the Fall Equinox is all about balance.
What is your favourite thing to cook? Can we have the recipe?
I’m into juicing and smoothies right now. Here is one of my favorites!
Turmeric, Banana & Ginger Smoothie
1 medium banana
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1 tbsp hemp seeds
1/4 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp ginger, minced
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tbsp honey
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
3-4 ice cubes
Add all ingredients to a blender, and blend for 20-30 seconds or until smooth and creamy. Top with additional hemp seeds and turmeric if desired.
